HISTORY OF SJ ASSOCIATES
SJ Associates NYC, LLC is a boutique tax accounting firm built on a legacy of dedication, relationships, and excellence in tax services. The firm traces its origins to Better Tax Service (BTS), founded in 1976 by Elaine Jacobson, a pioneering figure in the tax profession.
Elaine’s vision was simple yet powerful: to provide personalized, trustworthy tax guidance while forging meaningful relationships with her clients. From its earliest days, BTS served as a family business, with all four of Elaine’s children—Billy Jacobson, Sara Brandston, Shelly Jacobson Taylor, and Andrew Jacobson—joining the practice at one point or another. Each of them inherited Elaine’s passion for the profession, going on to establish their own successful boutique tax practices in New York City.
The journey has not been without challenges. In 1992, the family suffered the tragic loss of Billy Jacobson at the age of 38 due to AIDS. Despite this, Billy’s legacy endured, as many of his loyal clients continued to work with other family members—a testament to the enduring trust and relationships that the Jacobson family built with their clients. Remarkably, some of these clients remain with the firm to this day.
Elaine Jacobson continued to work tirelessly, embodying her steadfast commitment to her clients until her retirement at the age of 90 in 2020. Even now, many of Elaine’s original clients remain close friends of the family, a reflection of the deep, enduring connections that define SJ Associates’ approach to service.
SJ Associates NYC, LLC, led by Shelly Jacobson Taylor, continues the family tradition of treating clients as more than just accounts—clients are family. Over the years, the firm has supported individuals through all stages of life, from graduating college to starting families, building careers, retiring, and becoming grandparents. The relationships often span generations, as the firm now serves the children and grandchildren of its earliest clients.

In May 2025, we sadly said goodbye to Elaine, a beloved member of our team and an integral part of our story. Her dedication, warmth, and contributions continue to shape who we are, and her presence is deeply missed. We honor her legacy in the work we do every day.
